Cat Spaying & Neutering

For many of us, the sight of homeless cats is all too common. We see them roaming our neighborhoods, investigating our yards, and raiding the trash in our downtown areas. Many people wish there was something they could do to help the situation. While we can't solve the problem all at once, we can start by ensuring that our own cats are spayed and neutered before they are able to reproduce.

Cat Spay

At Our Pet Vets, proudly serving the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego as well as the La Mesa, CA, area, we agree with the American Veterinary Medical Association’s stance that cat neutering and spaying should take place by six months of age.

We understand that having your pet spayed or neutered is a big decision, and though it’s the most common cat surgery, it is still an invasive procedure. That's why we created this guide to help you better understand the benefits. As always, you should consult with your vet about your pet's individual needs.

Why Should I Have My Cat Spayed or Neutered?

Besides helping to control the feline population, spaying and neutering have many health and behavioral benefits. Overall, cats that have been “fixed” live longer, more content lives than those that are not. This procedure will eliminate the risks of ovarian, uterine, and testicular cancer and greatly reduce the chances of mammary cancer.

Regarding behavior, cats that have been spayed or neutered are less likely to exhibit aggressive and destructive behaviors, mark territory (urinate), howl and cry, or try to run away. This last benefit is crucial because it ensures male cats, especially, will not engage in fights that can expose them to diseases and wounds that can become infected.

It has been found that most cats become more friendly and make better companions because they are not focused on mating. Spaying and neutering are also cost-effective, as they save you from paying medical costs for pregnant cats and their litters, as well as the medical issues that often plague non-spayed/neutered pets.
